City of Mechelen - Thermal Inspection of Residential Area

On behalf of the City of Mechelen, a thermal inspection was conducted on a residential area. This allows residents to gain a clear visual understanding of the heat losses from their property. Consequently, the city can more easily persuade them to undertake energy-saving measures. Insulating the roof can already lead to significant savings.

Using a drone equipped with both thermal and visual cameras, the residential area was flown over. It’s important to note that this was done on a cold and cloudy day to maximize the temperature contrast between indoors and outdoors.

After processing, the result is a large orthophoto that can be loaded into GIS software for parcel-level analysis. In this way, a drone provides a fast and cost-effective method for mapping such areas.
